House minority leader faces opposition in the election to the top position.
For the first time in 100 years, a Speaker of the House of Representatives has not been chosen on the first ballot. Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, who had been the House Minority Leader, failed to secure the position to assume leadership of the lower chamber in two ballots.
Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, who previously stated he did not want the position, has a portion of the majority party’s support.
Congressman McCarthy of California has given dissenters several concessions in an attempt to secure the speakership. “It’s not clear how many rounds it will take until a candidate wins,” Representative Dan Crenshaw said, adding he would stick by McCarthy no matter how many rounds it took.
